Pontica ProStockHead #427 18 Degree BBC valve train ????

Postby star393 » Oct 27 2008, 05:14

These heads came in many versions over its history 18 degree heads and one of them versions was finished head made without push rod holes in head. The idea was to let the engine builder ie( pro stocker) move the intake push rod over past the intake wall and do alot of porting on intake without needing to weld up the intake wall were the push rod use to be drilled thur part of the intake wall on previous versions. I have a set of these heads and am looking forward to using them new in the box. I have quite abit of valve train parts an i am in need of information on what intake rocker stand jesel or t&d to use here as a offset of appox. 0.500 is needed to put push rod outside the wall. I want to retain this feature of the head and not drill into the side of the intake wall and for future porting on bigger motors.
The body of a .500 offset is about 1.400 to 1.625 depending on , whats used so thats a whole diff. stand for the intake. Exhaust iam leaving alone. Jesel and T&D are not to willing to offer info on there sizes. so its hunt and peck or blow 2000.00 to them and let them outfit heads with valve train, not in my forcast thats for sure. So any infor from anybody that can advise me on part numbers of set up would be very helpful.

JUst to let everyone know about this article on looking for info.
These pro stock heads were way ahead of there time they were devloped by Lee Shepard (passed away) and built for GM and built by Brodix ,they came in many Versions and i have a set without push rod holes. The elite pro stock guys back in the day and the founding fathers to this new tec. we now have brought about the Dart big chief head also. The idea behine no push rod holes was to be able to move over the current push rod to a new position out side the intake wall so that extream porting could take place without welding up the old position were the standard push rod did go which was partially thur the intake port walls. When doing that a new valve train Geo had to be created for the intake locations, this is the info that i was looking for. People are now gone and others are sick and passing away with all this info. Jesel and T&D wont let go of info without making big money. The new heads have just caught up to this old great design which on the exhaust side still rained supremiority. Thes heads came in to basic Versions 460 cc intake ports, 385 cc exhaust ports and 385 intake ports often confused and called Big Chiefs they are not they are called Pro Stock Pontica heads # 10045427 18 degree heads for the BBC they came with 4.900 bore c/l and also standard BBC bore c/l,s The intake rocker arm moving over buisness can be had from T&D or Jesel for $2000.00 so you can see why they wont give out any info. So it looks like i have to make my own stands and select my own rockers moving over .450 to .550 to move push rod outside the walls.
These heads were built for large CI motors 550ci plus and not well suited for automatic trans in small cube motors.
The flow numbers are 510 cfm out of the box unported so they say and huge on the exhaust side also so behine my high rpm 541 manual trans with 538 and 302 first gear its a marrage for me to have these. Most of the heads left are molested and well gone over and mine are brand new in the boxes so i can start small and go bigger when i get bigger cube motors if that ever happens. Thanks for reading and hope it helps to allow others to learn more.

Please others with knowledge on this head add to this info iam am eager to learn more also.

Ive been trying to get some work done here. I streched out the width of the stand and fitted it to a 1.450 wide body to off set the intake push rods. Iam making them in alum first to get the sizes right then into steel and heat treated. I did these in a bridgePort Mill. Pixs of my work. These will be some kick ass heads when done. Old is never over the hill.

How much hp and flow do you need for your engine?
You might want to talk to Mark (vortecpro) and see what it would take for him to do up a set of heads for you.
He is a genius when it comes to making heads work.
Plus he is a good friend of mine.

Well i bought a set of iron eagles 345,s Just a set to replace my 990,s This will get me runing and into the 2011 season although good flowing possiblities for the future, iam going to do some serious clean up and port matching and exh side tinkering. All my 990 parts will fit these heads so iam in business again. Better cast iron, removable bronze guides, no heat cross over, spring seats already at 1.750 and nice thick walls for porting. Got a good deal too, New heads.
