My car

Postby jlk72355 » Mar 23 2010, 04:19

Guys, I don't think mine falls in the same caliber as your cars do, it isn't a tube chassis car, or an 11 second bracket car. I am working on it though, and it is a "project", so I figured I'd post some pics so you guys can see what I'm up to...

I made a few mistakes on the last build up and it caused me to have to take it apart again...

This was when I thought she was ready to come out for good, around Christmes time...

Then a few weeks ago...this happened....

So after pulling it apart, I got to work on the head/valve...

new/old - the new one needs a bit of a backcut, huh?

then in the drill, to spin one way while I use the die grinder to zip off some of that lip the other way...

after polish - better than what I was trying to match

picked this up for cheap...it was really beat-looking, got it all cleaned up

and went for this because of some lifter wear that made me nervous.

Image

that is a Howard's hydraulic flat tappet sbc cam, #110991

advertised 284/284
at .050" 220/220 and .470/.470
108 lsa and 104 icl

My buddy Jeff Swisher in Oklahoma ported and set up my heads. They need a single pattern cam, and need to stay under .480 lift for the spring pressures they are set up with to get some R's. This cam is perfect, low and mid torque, good overlap, and idle vacuum for a street car.

Right now I have some cleanup to do to surfaces on the block, and some parts to clean/paint, and I'll be putting it back together and breaking in this cam.

Pics and progress to follow if anyone's interested...

Yes we are interested Jake.

I have said it before and will say it again.

I does not matter if your car is a 6 second funny car or a 15 second lead sled.

This forum is about hotrods, hotrodders, and folks that like to spend time together talking about and showing off their passion.

If you signed up and had a Yugo I would still be as supportive...maybe not until I got a few jabs in but still you and your car would receive the same attention and friendship.

Keep us posted on the progress please.

Ha! 15 second lead sled.....

Lets see, my '65 ran a 94 mph at 14.3 --- almost a lead sled. LOL

(That was a couple of years ago... I think it will be faster this year!)

Nice pictures.... I enjoy detail shots like that.

When I first got my 65 it ran 15's, when I sold it it ran mid 12's in shitty air.

At sea level it would have gone in the 11's.

It's all about what you want.

If you want to take it out for a 500 mile cruise you sacrifice if it runs 10's, if you want to run 10's don't plan on doing any road racing with it.

There is a balance, but it is personal preference.

I am jealous of Jakes car, mine was never that sweet, but I could drive to the track and back, lay down some nice times, send some Big block boys home crying and drive it home. I could also go on those long trips but I had to change rear tires to do it and then put the slicks back on to race.

Progress updates coming later Carl. :D

Wow!! This feature in the site software is pretty spiffy.

At least one new post has been made to this topic. You may wish to review your post in light of this.

Awesome!!!

I'll bet 15s is right. I think it is sporting a 2.56 ring gear. Wait until I get a better gear and this thing is pulling at 6500 with a 4.10 gear. 8)

My dad always said...flattery will get you everywhere.

There is a lot that could be done to my car. It was gone through, but not completely. What needed to be replaced was replaced, but some things were left...this was when my father restored it back in the late 90s. I don't mind that it doesn't have wipers, or a heater, I really just want to be able to hammer on it every once in a while and not worry about anything tearing up. I'm shooting for being able to roast the tires anywhere from a stop up to say 30 or 40 mph.

Hell yeah, Carl. I think it will always just be a cruiser. I take it to shows, and park it with all the cars on beds of mirrors, and more people look at mine because they can tell I drive it. I'd like to be able to surprise some people with it, but it would be light to light on a saturday night or a blast on the freeway for fun.

In the works to be done in the next week or two hopefully

get the engine buttoned up and broke in
get to my buddy's house (guy with the monster truck) so we can put in my new 3" exhaust system. i have mid length headers with 3" collectors. he'll cut and fabricate some bends into offsets so we can put it up there nice and tight. it will run back to the rear axle, through a set of dumps and then a set of thrush chambered 3" in/out mufflers, with turndowns.
get to my paint guy's place so he can do something WITH THE $%&$&@#()&@#(&@() SCRATCHES ON MY TRUNK LID FROM THE $&@#()@#&( CAT!!!!!!! I AM GOING TO $&@#$!& KILL THAT CAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Seriously, that is the truth. I went out to the garage today and saw the cover (which I just started putting on the car again because the cat got on it) all bunched up on the floor....and 2 paws worth of scratches on the rear quarter right above the bumper. Oh man. I was going to eviscerate that cat, Hopefully it will buff out.

Re: My car

Postby jlk72355 » Mar 23 2010, 22:56

I've been wrestling with the timing cover today. The engine is still in the car, and I'm trying to change cams with it in there still. This is all new territory to me, all of it, and I'm learning as I go. My neighbor will help me, but he takes engines out to swap cams. I'm reading on the web, at numerous car sites that I can do this with the engine still in the car, just that the timing cover takes a bit of finaggling.
I used the bench grinder to take down the "ears" on the part of the cover that winds up inside the pan, so it will slide into place easier. Now mind you, I'm just "practicing". There is no goop or sealant, or gaskets, or anything, just a clean block, pan, and cover. I shouldn't say that, because I am using one piece, the flat u shaped seal that goes in between the cover and pan. You're supposed to loosen the front 2 bolts on each side of the pan, and it is supposed make it easier to slide back in. I've got all this done, and I can get the cover back on almost all the way. I can't get the cover over the second locating pin on the block, which enables the cover to sit where it needs to so it can bolt on and seal right. Then there's all this goop that is going to be all over everything when it is time to actually do it. My problem is (I actually have lots  ) that the oil pan isn't dropping any, it seems like all the rest of the bolts would need to be loosened some for it to drop any, unless I'm doing something wrong. Imagine that, me doing something wrong...there's a shocker.

Jake
You gotta damn nice Chevelle. Plus you can take pride in doing things yourself and learning how to do new things as you go. I've been working on cars since I was 12 years old and have a big brother I learned from. I made and still make mistakes. How are you gunna learn if you don't try. So I think you should take a hell of alot of pride when you talk about your ride on here. I think I speak for everyone when I say yes we are interested in what your doing to your Chevell and keep us posted. :) If you want a 10 second time slip, you'll get one in no time. Heck ask Mark (spib) about what he has gone thru with his ride. I believe he will have his 10 second time slip this year.
Keep up the good work Jake
