Got some time this weekend...not enough to finish, but it is closer. I had to replace the throttle cable today, the old one had 38 years on it. Got the vacuum fitting on the intake, the spacer and carb on, valve covers, alternator and bracket/belt, new throttle line ran, throttle/tranny linkage hooked up, some hoses and stuff, the starter wires are hooked up, one header, etc.

You are getting ther...always better to fix little things while it is down rather than be disappointed afterward and having to crawl up in there with everything hooked up.

Thanks fellas!! I got the other header on tonight and my old pipes/glasspacks are on so there is something there to quiet it down during break in.

The only things left...

Distributor Cap/Coil
Spark Plug wires
Water temp sensor
Hook up fuel pump
Hook up battery

That should be it.

What is the best way to make sure the fuel supply is primed all the way into the carb? I have a stock Carter M6624 6psi mechanical pump.

On a Holley, you can fill the bowl by pouring fuel down the vent tube, that would ensure there is fuel there for the initial start-up. There should be enough fuel in the bowl to run the engine until the mechanical pump "catches-up" and has fuel pumped to the carb. Looking good! :D

The engine has been broken in.

I primed the carb by hooking up the pump and carb lines, and pushing the pump arm against the block...like a charm, the primary bowl was filled up. After a few little adjustments she cranked up. I held it over 2000 for 25 minutes, varying a little every few minutes. Timing was at about 36 total, and my adjustable vacuum advance (new) was adding about 16 degrees. The temp got up to just over 200, but never spiked.

I changed the oil in between the 2 break-ins and once again afterwards. I started it up again and got the idle down to about 800, and went for a little spin around the block. Something is wrong, the timing is off, or the carb needs adjusted. I am not sure what it is, but when I drove it, she seemed to be running at like 60% power.

I am going to do cranking compression test on all 8 tonight, and make sure the valvetrain is all set up ok, and everything is moving right...then onto timing and carb.

My light showed about 25 degrees of advance at 800 rpm. Since I just put this re-curve kit in it, I am going to have to figure out what it is doing. I am not sure if it has 25 degrees of initial or if I was getting mechanical advance out of the distributor at idle... I am thinking that is a possibility because I did put in the lighter weights and some lighter springs.

I have video and pics, but just wanted to drop a post real quick...

Well it is running, and pretty good, I might add. I have a leak though, and I'm not sure where it is coming from yet. I think it is oil. I noticed a small spot under the car when I backed her out yesterday, and sure enough there was another one today. It is dripping off the flywheel cover, and back on to the tranny pan. Unless I'm seeing things, it looks like it may have sprayed or blown onto the pipes that come off my shorty headers, too. There are a few spots on my firewall on the passenger side, right behind the tranny dipstick tube, too. I'm 99% sure it is oil. The oil pan looks clean and dry, and the oil pressure gauge reads 80 when I'm cruising. I have cork valve cover gaskets and 5" long spreader bars. I haven't seen any evidence that the valve covers are the culprit. I'm going to start chasing it down from the top end, checking obvious things, like the oil gauge connection to the block behind the intake, and the distributor/intake mating surface (THANKS VINCE!!!!). Then move down to the bottom and check the oil pan bolts. The dipstick is still showing full, so I guess it isn't losing too too much, but still.
