Emissions testing

Postby Chevguy65 » Oct 19 2009, 22:41

Is coming to my county.
Big bummer, that pretty much takes any thoughts of doing an S10 out of the equation.
My question is how do other states get around it that have emission laws?

In Idaho anything newer than 1984 must have catalytic converter and air pump.
The only years I can think of passing with will be 1979 or older.
Anything newer than 1965 must be emission tested.
Now the test isn't as stringent for a 65 as a new car but they still have to test and pass.

Up until now our county had no emissions laws.

Don't feel bad, because here, even a Check Engine/Service Engine Soon light will get you a FAIL when you go to renew your vehicle inspection.

MN had it for several years back in the early 1990s. One way you were allowed to go around it was to have a pre-emissions block installed, then it was verified by the test center. I had an 83 Grand Prix with a Caddy 472 installed. I went with casting number books and showed that it was a 1970 block. The only other issue was that I had to pass a sniffer and filler neck test. They couldn't get a sniffer in the pipe, so they put it under the hood (???). They changed the VIN on the emissions computer to show mine was exempt and I kept a copy in the glove box.

I am with you Carl, emissions suck. You have to have the stock smog equipment so it's not about whether your car will pass emissions. I had to remove the headers off my ZR-1 because I couldn't hook up the air injection. There goes 20 HP.
