my friend owned a 98
they are made by mazda, his actually held up pretty good.
he just traded it last summer for a pontiac. the pontiac so far has given him more troubles than the escort did.

I had a 94 that I bought used in 1996.. I don't know about the 98, but this one was made by Ford (Made in USA by Ford Motor Company on the door plaque), but shared many components with the Protege. I sold mine with 180,000 on the clock in 2005, and I had very few problems. I replaced the clutch once and the brakes like 5 times (typical modern car problem - too thin rotors). The AC didn't work when I sold it (compressor was frozen). The guy still has it.

I would take it to a mechanic for an inspection, but unless it's a lemon rebuy or a flood car, I don't think you can go wrong.
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.
