67 Camaro SS350 prop valve rebuild kit?

Postby Bowtie » May 01 2007, 16:11

A buddy has a 67 SS350 Camaro, he's got a prop valve that keeps sucking air back in from pitting ont he shaft. He wants to rebuild his, not get a new one. Does anyone know of a supplier for parts? He's plenty skilled to do the work, just can't find a supplier.

Here's the car:

still needs some cleaning up under hood-this was literally just finished and running before the show.

No, he's not going to join us, I've asked several times, plus he's got dial-up, and not too into boards. Hell of a tech, though. He's been helping me through my car as I need it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he's probably not going to have much success if the shaft is indeed pitted. Between that little fact, and the fact that I don't think I've ever seen a kit for them, I'd say if he's hardheaded, take it apart, take measurements of the bore and shaft, and visit his local bearing house or hydraulic supply house, and try to match up the seals with new ones. Or save time and not put that nice Camaro at risk, and buy a new one. Some things, you just shouldn't mess around with. Brake safety is one of them, especially on a nice car.

master power brakes have them
now is that an original brake system or a disc from drum conversion?
from the pics it looks like a conversion
http://www.mpbrakes.com/products/product-detail.cfm?product_id=611
that is a combo valve which does the work or the prop valve and residual valves.
dont attempt to rebuild any brake parts !
failure can be catastrphic!
he should call them for the proper part btw.

I FORGOT TO ADD, He actually had a new rod machined for him, but then he saw it was still leaking form the seals. As for conversion, not sure what he's done, but I'll pass it on to him.

Yo, thanks Dawg.

I agree, why fool around with it? Just buy a new one and get it over with, they are cheap enough. I'm also curious to why he wants to rebuild the old one, the rest of the car doesn't look like it's 100% factory stock anyway. Sorry, I guess I'm not too much help.

I think the biggest thing is he doesn't really want to spend $100 when all he really needs is the couple dollar seal. He's gonna stop by the local brake warehouse who does rebuilds of stuff (boosters/MCs/Calipers) and browse thier boxes of seals to see if he can match it up by chance.

"If he can match it up by chance", huh? I certainly hope that he's not one of those "close enough" guys... "Aw yeah, I'm sure this will fit".

I'm with Dawg, there's no reason whatsoever to dick around with the brakes like that.

Nah, he's not like that at all. This place does rebuilds and sells new, he just doesn't want to buy the whole thing if all he needs is a seal. They should have it, he just needs to bring his in so he can match it all up. I agree, and I know he does too, the brakes are better than any insurance policy, and since he's pushing pretty big power, he won't be taking any chances I'm sure.
