12 BOLT REBUILD TIPS

Postby Bowtie » Sep 30 2008, 18:19

So I'm getting a 12 bolt from a local club member this evening since the 8.2 should have died by now. It's a 2.73 open one, but I will be putting in 4.10 posi. Any tips for rebuilding it? I've only watched when we did my 8.2", and will probably have it set up by a shop around here, but I would like to know specifically what's involved. I don't plan on narrowing it, just cleaning it up.

Anyone have a good how-to site or reference I can see?

If it has a 2.73 gear, you will have to run a spacer ring to get a set of gears. They don't make a 2 series gear set in anything like 3.73 or 4.10. Or you can buy a 4 series carrier new. OR you can get a posi from a 12 bolt truck rear, the pinion gear is longer, usually, so the gear set won't help. Get the posi traction lube from GM, even if the gear lube you go with says it already has it. While it is down, I would also have the c clip eliminators installed. Also, a good time to add disc brakes.

Thanks. I do plan on getting a ner series 4 carrier since I don't plan on going with less than 4.10s (gotta love overdrive and 28" tall tires!), I have plenty of posi additive available. I don't have any plans on more than my 425hp or so, so I'm gonna avoid the eliminators. I do plan on checking into rear brakes. like everything else, I plan on using only GM stuff-no aftermarket to make it work.

On the brakes check out speedway motors. You can get a set of cheapy brackets and use an Olds toranado front caliper and rotor. Brackets (the first set) were 26 bucks. I sourced the calipers and rotors new from my local parts guy. Under 200 bucks for all of it...

I'll keep it in mind. I'm a parts guy, so I like to try to find stuff just like that. I haven't decided what to use for sure yet, but I know of a set of 80's Camaro 1LE rear brakes available.
