Hitting the track in 10 days

Postby Bowtie » May 05 2010, 16:38

So I finally got my 12 bolt in, still haven't fired the engine and still have to bleed the brakes, but on the 15th I'm gonna be at the track. Honestly, I'm hoping for a 13.xx run on street tires, any better is icing. I haven't been to the track to race in close to 15 years, so I will be rusty as hell, but I am still excited.

Awesome news!!!!!

I think you will hit your target no problem.
LOL..your nerves will be on edge for tech and the 1st pass, after that you will be just like a seasoned pro.

Have fun and like WC1 said, keep us informed.

Good luck at the track. Be safe and let us know how it went. Fun thing is how you can improve your ET from the first passes you make. Have fun :)

Sorry, been busy at work, I don't get to pop in much.

First run was 14.15 shifting short at about 5700-5900, even put it in 4th at about 1000 feet. Here's video of that run:
Image

Second run put me at 13.92 with basically no changes other than raising the shift points to about 6200 and running out in 3rd. 3rd run got me a 13.89. 4th was with a buddy driving (he engineered the EFI, he gets a pass). 5th was playing with the "launch" and shock setting, another high 13, but it felt better even with a 6000 shift point. 6th I broke. Throttle pedal cable pulled out form pedal. 7th I was lighter on pedal at launch and got a 14.02. 8th cable broke again, got to take a idle speed pass down whole 1/4 mile.

9th was start of bracket racing. Here's a tip: hydrate, and eat. I was in line looking at the other cars I would be up against-all are in the car club class today. I saw lots of 14.xx cars, and because of the heat and not eating, I wrote 14.82 instead of 13.82 on my car. Dumb move. I broke out even with dragging at the end to try and bring it back to the other car. I broke out worse. Consolation pass I ran the best of the day at 13.73 shifting at 65-6700 and still spinning off the line. That was best 60ft too with a 2.01. Tires are Dayton Daytona 500 (similar to Firestone Indy 500) total all season deep groove not for drag racing tires. They do leave good black lines, though.

I figure something like drag radials and maybe some more stall would put me into mid 13s for sure. I did have 26" drag radials mounted and available to me, but with a 700R4 tranny and 4.10s, no way would it have been productive. I need 28s. It's not a drag car, but it was fun to see what it could do.

Great video and those are pretty darn good ET's too. Sounds like you had fun at the track and that's what it's all about. Plus you will shave some time off those ET's next time you go out. Good Job!

thanks. We were there on a club day, and a buddy was going anyway to continue to sort out his 67 Chevelle, so I figured why not bring a "ringer" in case they would do average club ET or something:

Ran an 8.88 on a 220 shot on this run, still hasn't touched the suspension.

Bry,

Nice runs on your part and that 67 is just bad to the bone.

Glad you got out, funny, drag racing can be very addictive, did you get bit by the bug?

Not really bit by it. It's fun, but I have so many things I can't justify being gone a whole day for that plus the cost. 2 little kids now out of school, plus 1 work one weekend a month and wife works 2 of the other three leaves us only 1 to have all together. ABout 2x per year is max I would be able to swing. Since it's a street car anyway, now I know what I can try to beat on the street and what I should shy away from (more than I already knew).

If you see a gold 72 running mid 10s, that's Hoffbug (tony) from Team Chevelle. He's out there quite a bit. That silver one is pretty well hooked on drag racing now. I think in the last 3-4 years he went from a 13 second 5000# driver (Impala) car to a 10 second 69 Chevelle to this. Should be interesting when he actually takes the time to sort it all out and not just play.
